The root of the word “Amen” in ancient Hebrew means to be firm, reliable, trustworthy, steady. Today, whether in Judaism, Christianity or secular language, Amen always points to: Stability in the midst of uncertainty; Truth that can be leaned on.
“Amen” Yes, this is true and I bind myself to it. What is it that I find true after the bumps and crashes? This "Amen" is the final word of an inscription which runs at chest height around the side of the building. Things have changed since the words were put there: The original congregation moved to a newer building and another congregation took up residence. Some of the white marble stones which have gone missing have been replaced by concrete painted to match the original. Whether the cause was due to accident, ravages of time, or vandalism, the "Amen Corner" echoes the steadfastness of the meaning of the word. I like how this "Amen" wraps around the corner suggesting that what is trustworthy and firm continues around the corner and into the future.
